The Palio of Siena: The Tradition That Brings the City to Life
The Palio di Siena is one of Italy’s most celebrated historic events and embodies the city’s most authentic spirit. This spectacular horse race takes place every year in the magnificent Piazza del Campo, on 2 July and 16 August, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world eager to experience one of Italy’s most extraordinary traditions.
The two races are dedicated respectively to the Madonna di Provenzano and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, marking the climax of a four-day celebration. Throughout this period, Siena comes alive with historic parades, official ceremonies, Contrada dinners and centuries-old traditions that involve the entire city, creating an atmosphere unlike any other.
The true protagonists of the Palio are Siena’s Contrade, the city’s seventeen historic districts, each distinguished by its own emblem, colours and strong sense of identity. The origins of the Palio date back several centuries, and in its current form the race has been held since 1633, preserving its unique charm through the ages.
Today, it is far more than a horse race. It is one of Europe’s most captivating and emotionally engaging historical events, offering an unforgettable insight into the history, culture and traditions of Siena like no other experience.
