The History of Fonte Giusta

Often mistaken for the older Fonte Malizia, Fonte Giusta was originally located in Vicolo del Re, a now-closed alley that once connected Via Camollia with Via di Fonte Giusta.

When the street level was raised during the construction of the Church of Santa Maria in Portico, the fountain ended up beneath the new roadway. To allow local residents to continue drawing water, a long staircase was built leading down to the basin.

Towards the end of the eighteenth century, however, reaching the fountain had become increasingly difficult, as the staircase was constantly filling with earth. As a result, an opening was made in the vault of the fountain, effectively transforming it into a well, from which water could be drawn through a small window.

In the early nineteenth century, after it became clear that the staircase providing access to Fonte Giusta was no longer usable, it was converted into an entrance to the main underground water conduit supplying Fonte Gaia, which can still be seen today at the end of Vicolo di Malizia, near the Church of Santa Maria in Portico a Fonte Giusta.
