The History of the Fountain
Fonte Branda is the most famous, oldest and most imposing of Siena’s fountains. It is also mentioned in Canto XXX of Dante’s Inferno and is therefore included in the city’s Dante itinerary.
Built in 1193, it still retains much of its original architecture, while the small arches and battlements crowning the upper section were reconstructed in the early twentieth century.
This is perhaps the fountain most deeply connected with Siena and the city’s true identity. Saint Catherine of Siena, the patron saint of Italy, was born and raised here and is therefore remembered as the Saint of Fontebranda.
