The History of the Fountain

It is the queen of Siena’s fountains, undoubtedly because of its location in Piazza del Campo and its position at a higher elevation than the others.

Water first flowed from the fountain in 1346, and it was named Gaia in honour of the joy felt by the people of Siena. It was soon adorned with a series of sculptures created by Jacopo della Quercia between 1409 and 1419, regarded as one of the great masterpieces of fifteenth-century Italian art.

A reproduction of the work can be admired in Piazza del Campo, while the original remains of Jacopo della Quercia’s Fonte Gaia are preserved in the Santa Maria della Scala Museum Complex.

A section of the underground aqueduct that supplied the fountain can be visited by reservation.
